It was a fortunate day when
the Chaffey High School District hired Bette B. Harrison as a Spanish
teacher in September, 1964. In addition to her teaching responsibilities,
Bette assisted with the Girls League and other extra-curricular
activities.
In the 1972-73 school year,
she served in the areas of humanities, guidance and social studies. The
following year she joined the Guidance Department on a part-time basis.
Then in 1975-76 Bette became a fulltime counselor at Chaffey High School.
She served in this capacity until she was promoted to the responsibility
of Assistant Principal at Upland High School in 1979.
Her administrative ability and
professional skills were again recognized with her move to Principal of
Montclair High School for tenure of three years. It was at this point that
Montclair's loss became the whole district's gain as Bette assumed the
role of Assistant Superintendent of Instruction.
To further validate her
ability and expertise, in 1988 she was promoted to Associate
Superintendent of Instruction, a position she held until 1995.
At that time the Chaffey
District Board of Trustees selected Bette Harrison as Superintendent to
replace Dean Smothers upon his retirement. She has served in that role
until now and has been an outstanding model in her guidance of the
district as it has continued to grow.
Last year with community
support, Bette marshaled an effort that passed a much needed bond issue to
build two new high schools and renovate the older schools of the district.
She has served the district
for thirty-five years as a teacher with a genuine interest and devotion to
her students; as an advisor to both students and fellow teachers; as a
counselor able to use her Spanish-speaking skills assisting students and
parents who spoke only Spanish; and as an administrator, who has been a
model and a mentor to other district administrators.
Her administrative skills have
placed her at the pinnacle of educational leadership. She has served
beyond the district when called upon. Her characteristics of courage,
energy, enthusiasm, human relation skills and belief that hard work gets
results will leave a hallmark to be followed by her successors. Her
efforts over the past thirty-five years are indeed gifts to all that have
known and worked with her. |
