| Some changes are under way in the Chaffey
Joint Unified School District.
Dominga High School is now Canyon View High School.
Dominga was leased to the county as a special education campus. It is now
Canyon View, a continuation high school for the district.
"We had to have the facility (Dominga) back because of growth in the
district," said Superintendent Bette Harrison.
Much of the school is being swiftly renovated before the beginning of the
fall semester.
"Dominga finished its summer school session and we took over," said
Paul Ward, the new Canyon View principal.
Bulldozers have been working, concrete has been poured and the school has
been cleaned in preparation for the new crop of students to take over the
campus.
Canyon View will be the second continuation school in the district. Valley
View High School was the first.
"The first semester we will have about 125 students and 240 students the
second semester, " Ward said. "That is about half the size of Valley
View."
"We have hired six teachers new to the district," he said.
Canyon View has added computers in each classroom and is updating the
computer center.
The multipurpose room is being renovated to function as an orientation room
and media center for the students.
"We will offer all the graduation requirements the students need,"
he said.
Students who attend Canyon View will be drawn from the other district high
schools.
"Schools within the district refer students, then a committee decides
Canyon View or Valley View," Ward said.
The students who attend a continuation school are behind in credits, are
generally employed or need a flexible schedule for one reason or another, Ward
said.
"The majority of the students who will attend Canyon View are voluntary
transfers," he said. "The likelihood of them graduating from regular
school is slim, so they transfer."
So far, money has not been a problem for the new school.
"We're lucky, the state is out of recession, the district is supportive
and so are the voters who have passed some needed bond measures," Ward
said.
Long-range goals for Canyon View include transforming it into an option
center. This involves creating adult education classes, career counseling and
developing community programs, he said.
Ward has been with the Chaffey Joint Unified School District for 16 years,
his last six years as principal at Rancho Cucamonga High School.
"The goal of continuing education is that students will reinvest
themselves in educational goals," Ward said.
"This will be a very attractive and well-supported school."
