Art association sponsors exhibit The Chaffey Community Art Association is sponsoring an exhibition at the Museum of History and Art in Ontario throughout the month of September featuring the work of three local artists. Contemporary quilt artist Stan Book, ceramic artist Rupert Deese and sculptor Betty Davenport Ford are featured in the exhibition. Among the works of art on display are 43 completed quilts from Book, an Upland resident. The display represents a retrospective of Book's last 16 years of work. The Kansas native became involved with quilting through the influence and encouragement of his mother-in-law, Miriam Bowers and his wife's grandmother, Mary Harder. Harder had pieced hundreds of scrap quilts for Mennonite relief. Deese, whose collection of stoneware vessels are on display at the museum, has been a studio potter since 1950. The Claremont resident taught beginning ceramics classes at Mt. San Antonio College from 1957 to 1971. His work has been exhibited at various colleges and museums around the country, including the Los Angeles County Museum and Scripps College. Ford has been a professional sculptor since 1950. One of her most recognized sculptures is the Chaffey High School tiger, her alma mater. The Upland resident has taught at Pasadena City College, Scripps College and throughout California with the visual arts program. The Museum of History and Art is at 225 S. Euclid Avenue. Museum hours are 12 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. Information: 983-3198. |
