| SAN BERNARDINO -- The Chaffey Tigers started their season off with a win
Friday by defeating the San Bernardino Cajon Cowboys 38-28.
The Tigers were led by seniors Chris Jones and Pierre Johnson.
Jones scored three rushing touchdowns from 6, 24 and 50 yards, and Johnson
caught two touchdowns from senior quarterback Marshall Turner.
Chaffey started their scoring with a field goal from Joe Armenta midway
through the first quarter.
The Cowboys answered with a touchdown pass from Donte Williams to Jamal
Trotter with two minutes to play in the quarter.
Turner connected with back to back passes for a total of 70 yards to set up a
6-yard touchdown run by Jones to start the second quarter.
Later in the second quarter, Turner connected with Johnson for a 27 yard
score.
Just before the two-minute warning, Cajon added a touchdown and two point
conversion on runs by Bryan Howe.
The only score of the third quarter was a 3-yard pass from Turner to Johnson
at the nine-minute mark.
There was plenty of scoring in the fourth quarter as both teams managed to
score twice.
The Cowboys started off the fourth quarter scoring with a 1-yard run by
Williams.
Chaffey responded with a 24 yard run by Jones with 6 minutes to play.
Cajon connected on a 10 yard pass from Donte Williams to Johnnie Gillins to
draw within three with 2:57 left to play in the game.
The onside kick was unsuccessful and the Tigers recovered on the 50.
On the Tigers' first play Jones broke free up the middle and scampered 50
yards for the score to put the game out of reach.
Chaffey head coach Bart Goldstein changed up his offensive strategy for the
game.
"Our previous tendency was to pound the ball but the kids wanted to throw
the ball tonight and we did," he said. "I think we will throw the ball
more."
