The goal of this course is to instill in the ELD student a desire to read English-language text and a lifelong love of reading.  Students will be exposed to both fictional and non-fictional materials, including newspaper and magazine areticles, prose, poetry, essays, short stories, and novels, including intensive vocabulary development.  Concrete reading skills associated with reading proficiency will be learned.  Taken concurrently with ELD II.                                                                                                                                                       May be repeated for credit up to 20 credits total.

Students with normal hearing will be introduced to modes of manual communication utilized by deaf/hard of hearing people.  The focus of this course will be to familiarize students with aspects of deafness and to acquire basic signing and fingerspelling skills using American Sign Language.  Students will also be introduced to the deaf culture.  The second semester in the series will offer a more in-depth study of deafness and continue to further develop signing proficiency and vocabulary.
