| Chaffey: Back to the Past!
by Adelita Romero and Yolanda Macias, Staff Writers Do you ever wonder about
all the secrets and legends this mysterious school has? Well we are here to let
you in on some of the history that makes up Chaffey High.
The 20 acres that serve as a home to Chaffey used to be a college, known as
the Chaffey College of Agriculture. On October 15, 1885, the college first
opened, and later reopened in 1901 as Ontario High School. That's right! We were
the first Ontario High. The name was changed ten years later to Chaffey High
School, in honor of the Chaffey brothers, who first purchased the land and
founded the school.
The two men known as the Chaffey brothers were George and William B. Chaffey.
They came from Ontario, Canada; their goal was to develop a community that would
attract people to its beauty.
The community was named "Ontario Colony Lands," now simply known as
Ontario. The first graduating class of Chaffey High School walked in June, 1912.
So far, 86 classes have graduated from Chaffey High. We wish "tiger
luck" to the 87th graduating class of Chaffey High-the final class of the
century, the class of '99.
