Clubbing on Campus
by Dustin Rowlands, Editor and Jahesha Kensey, Staff Writer Bored? Looking
for a club to join? Take your pick! Chaffey offers dozens of clubs from which to
choose. Whether your interest is French to friendship, Chaffey's got the club
for you.
Thespian is an invited membership club based on students'
participation and interest in theater. Mr. Masterson conducts this group of
students in appreciation of drama.
Technician is a folk dance performance club. They also participate in
a variety of dances from Spanish-speaking countries around the world. These
dancers are led by Mr. Montague.
CALM is a group of students who put together a literary magazine
published in the spring. This magazine displays the talent of students in the
form of short stories, poems, and essays, with Mr. Rush as their mentor.
AVID is a class that Mr. Koester advises, but the students run it with
officers. It teaches success skills and motivates the students to work hard and
strive for their goals in life.
KIWINS is an International sponsored youth service club. They provide
service to the school and community under the support of Ms. Mikinin and Mrs.
Vanderbeck. They conduct meetings during lunch to plan for future activities.
Officers are elected each year.
AASU was organized to study and promote African-American culture and
heritage on campus. At meetings the members and advisor, Mr. Ruiz, also address
cultural awareness and advancing a higher education for black students.
MECHA is a Latino organization at Chaffey also advised by Mr. Ruiz.
Their primary purpose is to promote Latino culture and heritage. Post high
school education for young Latinos pursuing careers is also another issue they
focus on at meetings.
STAND is a multicultural group of students whose desire is to
celebrate diversity by socially bringing together the naturally diverse
population in the community and on campus. Mr. Ruiz also mans this club.
NESC is the study of natural history. Mr. Reeves discusses the
environment and takes the students from the class on field trips every year to
get some hands-on experience in the world around us. Last year the class flew to
Hawaii for five days. This year they plan to embark on many trips once again.
The Grand Canyon, Mammoth, Sea World, Death Valley and Santa Rosa Island are
just a few places they will visit throughout the school year.
The French Club is advised by Mr. Haine, and the students meet during
both lunches every other Wednesday to promote the French-speaking cultures
around the world. In the past few years, the club has gone on educational field
trips to see Le Cirque du Soleil, French movies, and French plays like Les
Miserables.
Conflict Management is a class students can take that trains them to
solve problems on campus between students. This club was organized a few years
ago to decrease student conflict and is advised by Mr. Mercado. Students can
take this class in the beginning of the school year, but admission into the
class second semester doesn't happen very often because students need to be
specially trained. |
