SSR Postponed Until Second Semester
by Jasmine Patrick, Staff Writer Recent test scores have shown that the
reading potential of teens is not up to par. "What better solution than to
reinitiate the Silent Sustained Reading program at Chaffey?" proposed our
very own librarian, Mrs. Victoria Waddle.
Basically, this program supports reading by encouraging everyone--teachers,
staff, administration, proctors, custodians, and students alike--to bring their
own books and magazines to school and providing fifteen minutes to read
silently.
This new program, which was scheduled to start first semester, was postponed
until second semester due to a lack of preparation and time to readjust the
school bell schedule. Many teachers, however, particularly in the English
department, have already established this practice in their classrooms. And it
is assured by administrators that beginning in February, the bell schedule will
be altered to add a few minutes to third period where, for the first part of
class everyday, Chaffey will bow its head in silence...to read. |
