As the largest school in the area and the third largest school in the country,
Chaffey requires constant maintenance to keep the campus looking as beautiful
as it does.
During the summer, several improvements were made, all of which have completely
benefited the school’s appearance as well as student life.
Many students were well aware of the bright orange fencing surrounding the newly-grassy
areas of the campus. The purpose was obviously to protect the new growth
from being trampled upon. Although the fencing was an obstacle, there was
a beneficial reason for its existence, which made the extra walking not
that much of a nuisance. Besides, the fences were removed
as soon as the lawn was completely grown in.
As if the home football games weren’t exciting enough, now it will be much
more comfortable to sit and watch the entire season since the bleachers
were completely renovated with aluminum benches. This remodeling took six
weeks and cost a whopping $117,000. But the time and money were certainly
well spent.
Perhaps the most noticeable and enjoyable improvement is the new marquee, provided
by Coca-Cola. Coke outbid Pepsi Cola for Chaffey’s business. As a result,
Coca-Cola paid Chaffey $50,000 to place Coke products on campus instead
of Pepsi.
With that money, Chaffey used $5,000 to purchase and install the marquee. The
old one was made of plastic, which had become cracked and broken over the
years, and it was difficult to change the announcements, since the lettering
had to be placed by hand. With today’s technology, it will be easier to
inform students of upcoming events.
After years of complaining, Special Education Department Chair, Jenny Hanley,
finally got her wish. The twelve classes in West Hall were installed with
air-conditioning. In addition, every seven years, a building is chosen
to be completely repainted--inside and out. This year the Home Economics
building was the big winner.
In the Industrial Tech. building, the old floral classroom was divided and
turned into two classrooms. Even the math department office was partially
remodeled to provide one extra classroom, space being that limited for
the ever-growing Chaffey student body.
As for the academic benefits, a new computer lab was essentially added to
South Hall 10.Two teachers, Mr. Bruce Jones and Mrs. Casey Kruse,
are scheduled to each teach three periods of freshman English on the computer-enhanced
Nova Net system.
Additional remodeling will take place next summer so as not to disrupt students or
the learning process during the school year. But if Chaffey gets any better
looking, seniors will fail English and Government in the hopes of just
being able to watch the new grass continue to flourish and the marquee
scroll before their eyes.
