Assembly
Tigers Welcomed Home

By Danielle Barrasa, Staff Writer

Tiger spirit is back for the 1999-2000 school year. The first event, held on Friday September 18, was the Welcome Back Assembly in Gardner Spring Auditorium. The millenium classes gathered in G.W.S to welcome freshmen as well as new and returning students to Chaffey High School.

Veronica Ochoa (03) commented, “I thought it was pretty cool because the cheerleaders got up and danced, and I think Patty Gulino is awesome.”

Robyn Wapner (00) states that being class president “is the best thing in my life because I am able to represent the best class at Chaffey and in the whole world—2000 baby!”

The assembly began with the traditional introduction of the staff and class presidents. Next, the cheerleaders showed their Chaffey spirit as they danced on stage while the huge crowd applauded with growing excitement in their eyes.

Then Principal Brodie announced how well Chaffey performed on last year’s SAT’s, surpassing other schools in the district. The end of the assembly was highlighted by a slide show of last year’s memorable moments, filling the room with laughter and cheers.

The assembly reminded Varsity cheerleader Pricilla O’Dell (00) that “It’s sad being a senior because everything’s ending, but it’s also exciting because we’re the big people on campus now.’’

Fresh Faces at Chaffey
By Corinna Compian, Staff Writer

Crowded halls, long lines to get upstairs, and running into people are just some of the problems that are new to each year’s in-coming freshmen.Coming to Chaffey from middle school is a big step in the new comers’ lives, but can they handle it?Being a freshman can be a burden especially if you’re intimidated by the upper classmen.

Alecia Hemsath (02) advises, "If you do your work in high school, it’ll pay off later, but still have fun.” Not too much fun though, since the typical freshman class will be half the size in number by graduation.

Some freshmen don’t realize how much they stand out; others don’t care. Several teachers have commented on how well the freshmen blend in because of how mature they look and act.At least some of the freshmen think positively about being a fresh face to

Chaffey. For example, Sheena Carter (03) proclaims, “This year is going to be great!”

Some freshmen are bummed though since they practically ruled their school as eighth graders, and now they’re back to being measly underclassmen.Being a freshman can be a pain especially when the upperclassmen tease you Lynne Neville (03) admits.“I hate when everyone boos at you during the rallies.”

The spirit rallies are always the coolest part of the school year even though the sophomores are more than likely to beat the freshmen.Shana Strigas (02) brags, “We’ll always beat the freshmen at the rallies because we’ll always be bigger than them.”

Don’t worry freshmen. The years go by more quickly than you could ever imagine. You’ll be back at the top of the food chain before you know it.Good luck this year!
