are showing promise with Danica De La Cruz (03) and Marcela Rodriguez
(03) already playing Varsity for Chaffey’s first two games. “I was so nervous,”
exclaimed both Danica and Marcela.
Coach
Ken Edwards has added a sixth period tennis athletics class. That
option has attracted many new girls to tennis. Presently, there are about
50 girls enrolled in the class as well as 7 girls that don’t have athletics,
but are still on the team.
New
member Mary Duarte (00) exclaimed, “I don’t really have time to
stay after school and play, so the sixth period class
helps, and I don’t have to miss an academic class on away games.”
However,
not all girls feel the same way. Tory Bylesma (02) also has the
sixth period athletics class. She says, “I don’t like having to wait so
long to do drills. I mean it’s great that these girls are interested in
playing tennis, but the team doesn’t get that much practice.”
The
girls certainly hope that the sixth period class does help them win. If
they do not make it to CIF finals this year, they will certainly be a threat
in the years to come.

Water Polo Dives Into Success!

It’s not as popular as basketball; it doesn’t have as big a turnout as football,
so what is it? Water polo! And it needs your help. With only six new members
on the boy’s team, Coach Hauder needs more players. “We’re always
looking for new players,” says Coach. “We have over sixty girls, but I
guess the boys just go home and watch television.”
|
Forget something? Chris King (02) dives into the pool wearing
sweatpants to increase water resistance, which makes for a tougher
workout. |
Coach Hauder is confident
that the team will compete for the playoffs although it needs to be remembered
that the team is only in its second year of existence after an absence
of several years. Hauder, working off campus, must make his way to practice
at three o’ clock to begin the workout. “It’s not the way I want to run
a program, and I would rather be on campus,” explains Coach Hauder. “But
Chaffey is so close, I could be here quick.”
The water polo team works very hard.Hauder explains a typical afternoon practice: “Usually they swim in
board shorts, shoes, and shirts; a mile swim in routine, with sit-ups and push-ups in between, and after that, the real practice begins.” Practices
are from 3:00 to 5:30. If you are interested in trying out for the team, make your way to the pool after school. Coach Hauder would love to have
you on the team.
The newest player, Guad Venegas (00) explains, “Everyone on the team helps each other out, and I’m treated nicely.” So if you’re thinking about signing up, do it! Don’t be afraid to put on those Speedos and dive into a water polo career at Chaffey! |
