Chaffey Football Declawed in Cat Fight
By Nicole Garzaniti, Editorial Editor & Krystal Reyes, Staff Writer
On October 15, 1999, for only the third time in the history of the Cat Bowl
(the rivalry between Ontario and Chaffey High’s varsity football teams), Ontario claimed victory over Chaffey with a final score of 16-7. A sad
loss indeed. |

“For the past two years we were a little scared of Chaffey, but this year we
came for the trophy, because we are the best of the Mt. Baldy league,” shared Ontario’s team Captain, CJ Mills (00).
The first quarter was action packed with perseverance flowing through the blood
of the Chaffey warriors who graced the field. This was not to be a simple game of winners and losers, but a game that would test the endurance and
self-confidence of all who participated. |

Down by three with two minutes to go in the first half, Chaffey put together
a beautiful drive. With twelve seconds remaining, Chaffey’s quarterback,
Chris Falkner, threw a pass to the end zone that was caught by
the receiver, but was jarred loose on contact with the ground. The
referee, not having the best angle, called the play incomplete despite
the fact that the ball was caught. A fumble due to contact with the ground
should have made the play a legal completion.
“You
never know until the gun goes off,” shared Ontario’s Coach Gibens when
asked what he thought about the outcome of the game.
You
couldn’t tell by the actions of the crowd that Chaffey wasn’t winning by
a landslide. Everyone was on their feet cheering their hearts out and showing
some real school spirit.
“It
was so much fun making the floats and even more fun screaming for the school
that I love,” declared Lizzet Galica (02).
Despite the audience’s support, the team has taken the loss very hard.
“It sucks,”
expressed Henry Soria #50.“I feel really bad. I guess I wanted more.”
He also adds, “I feel we worked as hard as we could; I guess we just didn’t
want it as much as Ontario.”
John
Malone #40 was also extremely disappointed. “I don’t
feel good. I didn’t feel right for a couple of days afterward,” he explains.
“We performed well, but we didn’t come together as a team that night; we
were kind of awkward.”

Proud coaches clutch the Cat Bowl trophy, treasuring every second.

The team really wanted to win for a reason besides the obvious. “We wanted to
beat what the Daily Bulletin said our odds were,” John admits. “We
should have been hyped.”
