Grade Distribution Night:
Did it bring agony or ecstasy to CHS students?
By Corinna Compian, Staff Writer

On November 16, Chaffey had its first quarter Grade Distribution Night, a time when parents picked up their child's first quarter grades and were able to discuss their child's strengths, weaknesses, and possible solutions with teachers.

Report cards were distributed to parents only, by counselors in the cafeteria. Teachers located in the South gym and band room informed parents as to how well their child was performing academically, and how well they behaved. Parent night also "gives the teachers a chance to meet their students' parents," replied Mrs. Eidson, a Chaffey counselor.

At many points, every building seemed packed with people. Assistant Principal Mrs. Orozco said administration was expecting at least 1,000 families but was gladly surprised to discover more than 1,100 parents showed up.

Students were not allowed to pick up their own report cards. Parents had to sign in and collect it themselves. If parents were unable to attend, report cards were mailed home the following day.
Many teachers gave extra credit to students whose parents attended, an excellent bonus for those doing poorly. This way they could start second quarter with a few extra points in their favor to help make up for any past mistakes.
If you earned high marks, keep up the excellent work so that you may continue to enjoy those extra privileges around the house (as well as any cash rewards). If you received poor grades and are grounded until you graduate, you now have plenty of time to do as much work as possible and raise those marks before the end of the semester, when grades are permanently entered into your school record. Besides, wouldn't it be nice to be off restriction and attend a party again?

Mr. Montague gives this horrified
student an ultimatum: pass or die!
