Resurrect Your Resolution

By Krystal Reyes, Staff Writer

Willpower is a hard thing to maintain, especially when the glazed jelly donuts are calling your name as you walk by Yum Yum’s every day on your way to school. With the New Year upon us, our willpower should be able to uphold a couple of resolutions, right? But are resolutions important to anyone anymore?

Most students still agree with Norma Flores (03) who explains, “Resolutions are important because they help you have goals for each new year, to make that year better than the one before.”To others it’s a matter of changing their whole lives. “My resolution is to get a record deal by 2001,” shared Yasma Tanomand (02), “and I think I have the willpower to make it.”

Ricardo Rodriguez, a mighty senior, has a simple resolution: to start saving money.

Why? I’m going to Disneyland! he exclaims. Todd McCown (02) just wants to become more responsible because “I put things to the side.”

Although resolutions are known as being difficult to keep, sometimes it’s thinking of one actually worth keeping that’s the hard part. “They’re good as long as you know you can keep them,” stated Elizabeth Brunelle (03), “but I don’t have one. I’m still thinking.”

And resolutions are not the same old clichés anymore. From record deals to increased responsibility, the ideas are the same. It’s not about losing weight or keeping your room clean; it’s about doing something to better yourself while still having fun in life. The New Year resolution is simply a personal goal to follow throughout the year. Some are simple; some are serious. Either way, in the end, keeping that promise to yourself can be rewarding. “It makes you feel good about yourself once you’ve accomplished your goals,” shares Maria Carlos (03).

So for all of you who are still thinking of that resolution, don’t worry. The year is still young. And for all of you who are still keeping yours, this Tiger Rag writer would like to know how you did it!

Dress Respectably, Get Respect
By Lailah Moridzadeh, News Editor

Why is it that women notice their flaws more readily than men? How often does a man wake up, look in the mirror and think,

My hips are getting wide! or I want bigger boobs! or possibly the most common phrase, I’m getting fat! Probably the most bothersome thing for a guy is when he finds a pimple on his face.

A guy’s dream girl has the body of Jennifer Lopez. A good body for a girl must be the following: slender and tall, yet with big boobs, shapely legs, a tiny waist, and don’t forget, a firm butt!

What’s the perfect male body? A six-pack abdomen, shapely chest, rippling biceps and wide shoulders are what make a superior male body. Males, however, can look their best far more easily than females. All a guy has to do is simply eat plenty of protein and carbohydrates, hit the gym occasionally, and boom-he’s in shape.

No matter how many times a girl presses her hands together and says, "We must, we must, we must enhance our busts” like Punky Brewster used to, they aren’t going to grow on command. Guys simply develop their muscles faster than women do. Women naturally are made with a higher percentage of body fat in order to bear children when the time comes.

Debbie Castillo (00) brings up a good point as to why women are more self-conscious about their appearance. She explains that women have more variety to choose from in order to develop their own style. “For the Homecoming Dance, all a guy needs is a suit and tie. Girls have hundreds of different dresses, of every color and style imaginable. When people have too many choices, it freaks them out.”

One thing that women sometimes do when experiencing low self-esteem is dress in short and revealing clothes. However, this has the opposite effect. It makes it even more difficult to find a good man out there who will respect you for you, and not your 4-inch tube top.

Billy Olsen, 19, and an Alta Loma graduate, explains his point of view. “When you dress hoochie-like, that’s the caliber of guys you are attracting. If you want the best, you have to dress respectably.” He continues on guys in general. “Bigger boobs do catch the eye more than smaller ones, but money and looks go away, and it’s what’s on the inside that really matters.”

That phrase is often used but seldom believed. Everyone is going to grow old and get wrinkles. It’s better to live the rest of your life with someone that respects you and loves you for your personality than the outside, which will fade anyway.

Ladies, it is hard to find a good man, but you have to love yourself and not lower your standards for anyone. Dress respectably, and you will be respected. Dress cheaply, and you will be perceived as cheap, and odds are, you’ll get a real cheap guy.
