Are You Stressed?
By Yolanda Zamora, Staff Writer
Are you one of those students who becomes stressed by every little thing? You're conscious that everything you do presently will have consequences in the future; therefore, you try to do your best.
Being a teenager is not an easy task, and if you have family problems, relationship problems, are struggling in school, etc., then it's even worse. |
Do you know how to cope with the pressure? You can't let every problem get to you. Problems are a part of life.
Ironically, some stress is good. In fact, everyone needs a little stress in their lives; without it, life would be dull and unexciting. Stress adds flavor, challenge, and opportunity to life; it can give you energy and pump you up.
Samantha Rubio (00) shared, "I become very
stressed out because of final grades, SAT scores,
college application deadlines, extra-curricular activities, and personal essays. Colleges use all of this information to determine whether or not you are admitted."
Challenges caused by stress can help you develop new skills and behavioral changes. However, too much stress can make you feel ill, frustrated, and worried.
What causes stress? Stress is caused mainly if you're experiencing change, either negative or positive. For example, a new student at school, delayed physical development, family arguments, the death of a loved one, confused feelings towards others, having a job, being involved in extra-curricular activities, and parent expectations are just a few among the many stresses with which teens must deal with.
What does stress result in?
If you are experiencing stress, you may feel overwhelmed by how little time you have to meet your expectations. You become impatient with yourself and others. You may cry and become upset over little things. You may worry about every minor detail in life.
The most common factor why people become stressed is because they want to do everything at once. On the contrary, you have to take everything step by step.
Stress results in physical ailments as well. For example, you can get stomach aches and diarrhea. Your heart rate increases, you breathe rapidly, you experience headaches, chest pains, sweating, sleeplessness, even alcohol and drug addiction.
Rosy Membrano (00) emphasized, "I feel extremely overwhelmed with responsibilities I didn't even know I was going to have my senior year."

Don't become worried if you have these stress symptoms; however, they do indicate that you are not managing your life effectively. These symptoms prove that changes need to be made sooner or later, or more severe consequences may follow.
What can you do to reduce stress? Initially, you should look at problems as challenges. Set goals for yourself, strive for excellence not perfection, get enough sleep, talk less and listen more, use time wisely, and always remember to smile. :) |
