CHS Mural Tradition Continues at Victorian Court

By Danielle Barrasa, Staff Writer

It's a wonderful feeling to give something special to people who are lonely and need a little joy in their lives. On February 4, Ms. Steffan, an art teacher new to Chaffey this year, took her 3rd period painting class to Victorian Court, a local rest home for the elderly. They went to see last year's mural entitled Dolphins to get an idea of what a mural should look like.

The mural is hung in the covered parking garage. Kimberly Hoffmann, the Director of Community Services at Victorian Court, gave the students a tour of the rest home and of the mural.

A tradition that started with Mrs. MacSweynn, who is on a leave of absence, and 15 students of last year's painting II class, the mural was placed in the basement so the residents can enjoy the tranquil ocean scene as they walk by.

Hoffmann shares, "So many of the residents have complimented it and say it brings them joy."

This year Ms. Steffan and her two painting II classes will collaborate on a mural based on intergeneration. This project will be continued throughout the semester, and upon completion will be displayed at Victorian Court as well.

Chaffey's art department is also planning on hosting an art show sometime this spring at which all art students' work will be displayed.
Daisy Gutierrez (00) expresses that the project is "cool, but I wish they hadn't given us a theme because it gives us a restriction on the project."

No longer will Victorian Court's parking lot be boring, for it now gives the residents something joyous to behold throughout their day. Maybe a picture doesn't seem like a big thing to teens who think they have their whole lives in front of them, but to the elderly, it is a little beauty they can hold in their hearts forever.
