Valentine Gift Ideas and Rules

Another Valentine's Day has rolled around again. It's last minute, and you have no idea what to get your crush to celebrate this special day? Well, here are some gifts you can quickly run to the store and buy, or better yet, some romantic ideas to easily arrange, before your would-be Valentine catches on and decides to go to the Prom instead with the 5-foot teddy bear she bought you last week.
Get him/her a gift they've been dying for like the new Cranberries or Blink 182 CD. They'll be impressed that you really know what they like. RULE: Don't go crazy buying your Valentine everything he/she desires unless you plan on scaring them or making them feel guilty because they didn't spend as much on you. Also, since this relationship may only be temporary, later you'll regret spending all that money after the break-up.
A card and a box of chocolates may be traditional, but traditional is unimaginative. And if she's on a diet, she may not appreciate your insensitivity. RULE: If you decide to buy candy, don't buy the biggest box you can find; sometimes it's the small things that count. But not those gross powder hearts with the sayings from 2nd grade. And don't get the cheap chocolate that will leave a bad taste in their mouth. Sure, there's no better way to a loved one's heart than through their stomach, but you don't want them to puke.
Take him/her out to eat somewhere you both would enjoy. If he likes Chinese food and you've never tried it, give it a whirl. Who knows, you might even enjoy it. RULE: Don't take him/her to a restaurant where the food is unhealthy and greasy. You both may end up with stomach aches and gas, and that's really not a gift you want to share with someone you like.
Go to the movies together; see something neither of you has seen. RULE: Girls, no chick
flicks; guys, no macho action movies. See something you both would enjoy. It could be a scary movie like the new Scream 3 or a comedy. Just compromise so everything will work out.
Invite them to dinner at your house, either to eat a meal you made for the two of you or dinner with the family. RULE: If you eat dinner with the family, be sure to hide all the photo albums and the embarrassing pictures displayed around your house. Threaten your family not to relive embarrassing childhood experiences.
Get them a necklace or possibly a shirt with their favorite band on them. RULE: Make sure the shirt is the right size. Don't offend a girl by buying a size large when they really wear a small, and your guy will cancel his Bally's membership if you buy him a size small t-shirt. Make sure the necklace is of good quality, not the kind you get out of candy machine.
Picnics at the park are always the most romantic. It's nice and peaceful and, depending on the park, there's a nice view. RULE: Make sure you pack the right food and that the park isn't all trashy. Either will totally kill the mood.
The best gift is to invite him/her over to watch a movie and just hang out, getting to know each other better. RULE: Talk about what interests you. If it's something you enjoy, they will enjoy listening to your excited chatter. Growing to trust each other with your personal insights and feelings is what's important. Just be sure not to talk about things that will cause an argument.
Hopefully this article enlightened and inspired you to run and get prepared for tonight. Remember, Valentine's Day only comes once a year, and this is probably your first Valentine's with this certain someone, so make it as special as they are to you.
