The Truth about Valentine's Day
By Patrick Jackson, Staff Writer
Well, here we are. Another year, a new millennium, another February 14th filled with overpriced chocolate wrapped in red foil.

Yes, it's Valentine's Day-the day you're supposed to show your loved one just how much you care...or else. After searching the aisles of Wal-Mart for those oh-so-clever little cards to give to all your little friends, do you ever wonder just who came up with this strange holiday, and who that pesky little winged naked boy is that shoots people with his bow and arrows?
At one time, this holiday was actually a Roman celebration called Lupercalia. The feast was later Christianized in memory of the martyrdom of Saint Valentine in 270 A.D..
During the Medieval period, Valentine's
Day became associated with the union of lovers and is still celebrated on February 14 by the exchange of romantic or comical poems called "Valentines."
Esther A. Howland created the first commercially produced valentine greeting cards in the U.S. in the 1840s.
So this time next year, when you're running low on cash and hating this strange custom, do as the Romans couldn't: print a personally-designed card from your home computer. Hey, you'll save a little money and maybe score a few creativity points with that special someone.
And just in case that creativity thing doesn't work out, feel free to use this trivia to impress some of those cute Chaffey girls out there. But keep the clothes ON, Cupid-boy! Good luck!
