Rio Vista the stately mansion of Mildura's
Co-Founder, W.B. Chaffey.
Built in 1889/90 and located at 199 Cureton Avenue is a fascinating museum with
original furnishing and fittings.
The Chaffey Brothers from Canada began the Mildura Irrigation Colony in 1887
after their successful irrigation achievements in California. The influence of
the Chaffeys is significant with the layout of Mildura based on the Californian
cities of Ontario and Upland. Many of the names of Mildura's streets are those
of Upland, our American Sister City.
Deakin Avenue, originally designed by the Chaffeys to run trams along the
centre plantation is a magnificent entrance into Mildura. It was named after
Alfred Deakin, the Victorian minister for water supply who later became Prime
Minister of Australia. |
