Chaffey Library Book-Plate
"The book-plate of Chaffey Library is
in a measure conventional yet in many features it is a local scene and is true
to nature. The front of the Library with its towers may be seen on the left and
on the right the low colonnade of a cloister. The padre leisurely reading a book
on his way from the Library to the cloister indicates the retreat of the old
education, while the new education is represented by the Chaffey Library which
looms up on the left in the foreground. In the middleground are the orange
groves suggestive of golden fruit, while in the distant background Mount San
Antonio rears its snow crowned summit above surrounding lesser peaks. The orange
groves are indicative of the fertility of the vicinity, while the mountains show
the source of the great water supply upon which the fertility depends. The olive
branch in the border at the right is typical of an extensive industry of the
region as well as the peace and joy that follow the reading of great
books.
The arms of the province of Ontario, Canada, for which this community was
named, appear in the border on either side, while at the top of the picture may
be seen the date of endowment and at the bottom a motto of significant meaning.
The whole scene is one typical of California and especially does it embody the
idea of the rich heritage of natural beauty and productiveness as well as the
evidence of literary culture."
