PHYSICAL EDUCATION HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE  OF CHAFFEY HIGH SCHOOL
Updated November 13, 2001

Compiled and typed by Glenn W. Killingsworth  Instructor Physical Education

This biographical sketch was compiled by the Chaffey High School Physical Education Department with "special thanks" to Glenn W. Killingsworth and Ron Montoya.  Sources utilized were the Chaffey High School Net pages, old FASTI yearbooks, the Official Guide to ONTARIO, and conversations with Forrest Anderson, Clyde Francisco and Ernie Payne.
Ontario is located on an alluvial plain in the southwest corner of San Bernardino County, bordered on the north by mountains and on the south and east by desert.  It was originally the home of the Serrano and Gabrieleno Indians.  During the 18th century the valley was visited by Spanish explorers and in the 19th century by American explorers.  In 1839 the Spanish Governor Alvarado gave a large tract of land, including Ontario, to Don Tiburico Tapνa.

Settlement of this area became possible when, in 1872, the Southern Pacific Railway tracks came through what would ten years later become Ontario, a Model Colony.  George Chaffey and his brother William, were pioneers from Ontario, Canada.  They first came to Riverside in 1880 with their families.  In 1881, they purchased 6,218 acres of the Cucamonga Ranch.  Realizing that transportation was essential to the success of  their Model Colony, they extended their holdings south to the Southern Pacific Railway.
