Peaches and Apricots Grow
Here as Nowhere Else.
Lying immediately south of town, between the orange groves
and the alfalfa lands, are 3000 acres planted to deciduous fruit trees,
principally peaches and apricots.
During the past two years there have been planted about 1500 acres.

These trees require no irrigation, where the soil is
properly worked, as the soil is a sandy loam and prevents evaporation of the
winter rains. Full bearing orchards
will average six tons of peaches, selling at an average price of $20 per ton
and five tons of apricots, selling at an average of $30 per ton. The cost to care for an orchard and harvest
crop, hiring everything done, is about $20 an acre.
We have one cannery in operation, with a capacity of 3,000,000 cans a
year, and another cannery in course of construction.
