AVID
9th Grade
Student focus in the freshman level AVID classroom is on developing
critical thinking and writing skills in fourteen different writing genres.
The AVID class promotes this development through both individual and collaborative
activities.
These skills, as well as core curriculum, are reinforced twice weekly
during tutoring days. The tutoring sessions are coordinated with college
tutors who are alumni of both Chaffey High School and AVID who are taking
classes at a local university.
Freshmen students also participate in both school and community activities,
which promote citizenship and enhance their standing in terms of college
acceptance through non?academic service.
Lastly, students visit and explore options of two to three local universities
in order to begin the process of determining their college/career goals.
10th Grade
Students as sophomores continue the processes begun in their freshmen
year and extend the levels of writing skills, as well as learning the art
of debate and consideration of multiple viewpoints on issues. They are
challenged to refine and expand their ability to express their opinions
in written as well as oral forums. The issue of debate as opposed to fight
comes to focus. 11th Grade
Now that foundations have been set, students begin the process of formalizing
career/college plans and establishing foundational requirements. Juniors
prepare for the SAT test in spring in both content and test?taking strategies.
Letters to corporations, technical schools and colleges are initiated to
allow early exploration of viability of their future.
During the spring quarter, Juniors also attend a college fair which
hosts over 200 universities and colleges, expanding their search beyond
the borders of their local area and state. Students are encouraged to examine
private, UC, Cal State and other universities.
12th Grade
Students armed with a rough idea of their goals and aspirations, begin
the processes for application for admissions and financial aid. In the
AVID classroom, seniors complete all college applications and submit them
within the November window to all applicable colleges and universities.
Immediately following Winter Break, the process of financial aid applications
is completed, using worksheets drawn up in September and October.
Seniors take one additional field trip to a university to explore student
life (dormitories, classes, etc.) and speak with counselors and advisors.
