SCHOOL DESCRIPTION

Chaffey High School, Located in the city of Ontario, is one of six comprehensive schools in the Chaffey Joint Union High School District. The enrollment is approximately 3,200 students in grades 9-12.

Founded in 1911 and rebuilt from 1933 to 1939, the 65 acre Chaffey campus has undergone reconstruction of many buildings, financed by the state's school modernization program. Chaffey is home of Gardiner Spring Auditorium, now a regional performing arts center.

Academics are important at Chaffey High School. The full spectrum of academic courses is complemented by a wide range of curricular activities. The athletic program at Chaffey involves more than 800 students and 42 coaches in twelve boys' sports and ten girls' sports.

SIX-YEAR ETHNIC TRENDS

During the last six years the ethnic makeup of the student body has changed, reflecting a statewide trend toward greater diversity.

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

During the 1998-99 school year we boasted 10 advanced placement classes. 141 students completed 246 placement exams. 69% of our scores qualified the students to receive college credit.

This year we plan to send three teams to the county academic decathlon competition. During the 1998-99 school year our students finished in fifth place, competing against 46 other teams from all over the county.

STAR TEST

For 1998-99 school year Chaffey Student's, as a whole, scored in the following national percentile ranks:

Subject 9th 10th 11th
Reading  20 20 24

Social Studies  30 27 42
Science 33 33 30
Language 36 28 36

1999 SAT EXAMS MEAN SCORE WERE:

*469 verbal, 469 math.

HOMEWORK

Homework is required in order for students to maximize learning. Teachers assign homework in order for our students to practice what they have learned in class, study for an exam or conduct research. Homework must be meaningful and count toward the student's final grade.

DISTRICT EXPENDITURES

The Chaffey Joint Union High School District is spending an average of $5,423.67 per student per year for all educational services including transportation, food services, instructional materials and maintenance.

CLASS SIZE AND TEACHING LOADS

Class size and teaching load are governed by the certificated employees' contract with the Chaffey Joint Union High School District. On the basis of a five-period teaching assignment, regular day classroom teachers may be assigned a maximum student load of 166 students except in cases of traditionally large classes such as band or physical education. The state funded class size reduction program has enabled all 9th grade English classes to have a 20.1 average student to teacher ratio for 982 students.

INSTRUCTIONAL TIME

The annual minimum instructional minutes required by the State Department of Education is 64,800. Chaffey High school exceeds the number of instructional minutes required. The school year has 180 instructional days beginning in September and concluding in June. The total number of minimum days in the school year is six. All minimum days are used for final examination schedules.

CLIMATE FOR LEARNING

The staff establishes high expectations for students at all ability levels. Awards and incentives are given frequently to recognize achievements. Rallies and assemblies are planned to increase school spirit.

Chaffey incorporates a safe learning environment for its students. The discipline policy is known by the students and staff and is enforced consistently by a dean of discipline, six comprehensive counselors and four administrators. A strong working relation ship has been established with the Ontario Police Department to make sure all students feel safe and are afforded the opportunity for an education. A school resource officer from the Ontario Police Department and San Bernardino County probation officer are assigned full-time to Chaffey High School.

SUSPENSION AND EXPULSIONS

During the 1998-99 school year, 24 students were expelled from Chaffey High School, and 4 received suspended expulsions. Students were suspended for a total of 1194 suspendible offenses, 532 were suspended from school.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE

Research shows that school achievement is closely related to school attendance. During the current school our attendance is near 90 percent. A high absence rate is an important indicator that a student is unlikely to graduate from high school in 4 years.

The state of California defines a dropout as any student in grades 10-12 who left school prior to graduation or its legal equivalent, and who did not, within 45 schools days, enter another school program.

Although our dropout rate is not significant, student attrition is a continuing problem at Chaffey High School. Various programs have been implemented to communicate with parents/students in an attempt to impact the attendance, effort and subsequent academic successes of students having difficulty adjusting to high school during their first two years. After-school tutoring programs with teachers have been implemented to motivate and retain students. During the 1999-2000 school year we are placing a high priority on reducing our absence rate, and we are attacking this problem with several significant new programs.

COMPARATIVE SALARY INFORMATION

The most recent information from the State Department of Education for comparative salary data is the 1997-98 school year. This information is based on high school districts with 15,000+ students.

Principals' salaries vary according to time in the position. The annual average salary for all Chaffey District principals was $90,640. This compared to a statewide average of $87,672. All certified and classified administrative salaries and board stipends in our District represented 4.6 percent of the total budget. This compared to a statewide average of 5.1 percent.
