Introduction
Perhaps some may not be acquainted with the record of the football team
since founding of Chaffey Union High School. It will be interesting to
note the progress made by Chaffey, over old Ontario High in regard to football.
Chaffey has been organized three years. The two years that have past
have left Chaffey's standing in second place, being defeated two years
ago by Pasadena and last year, 1912, by Santa Ana.
At the beginning of the school year in September last, our outlook for
a championship team looked even less favorable than in previous years.
Just before the start of school one of the most promising members of
last year's team received a serious injury, which eliminated him for the
season. Many of last year's veterans had graduated, leaving but four veterans.
But this did not stop the team. At the end of two weeks there were
from twenty to thirty men out each night.
A team was soon picked to represent the school by Coach Shutt. This
team, picked at the first of the year, remained the same through out the
year. It was the team that, owing to its physical training, needed no substitutes.
It was the team that went through the season victorious. The team received
no injuries. It was the team that won the California State championship. Although
winning the championship is not the only feature to a successful team,
it is, nevertheless, a great achievement and one that a school can not
perform every year.
Chaffey played her first game with Santa Monica at the beach. Chaffey
had not yet gotten under way and only defeated Santa Monica by the score
of 3 to 0.
